Toby's story hits me even though I don't have diagnosable social anxiety, though I suppose we all have some level of anxiety about social situations. I really enjoyed the way he describes his struggles, and it's quite gripping to see how he has pulled himself out of his situation. Great read, I highly recommend it.

One of the best books about social anxiety, covers some topics that no one else does. Written in a friendly familiar tone. It really helped me a lot and I cannot reccomend it enough.

Top-notch, sincere, and well-written. I appreciate the candor of the author, and the way his style is very down-to-earth and genuine. I've read quite a few works on anxiety, stress and worry; Some have helped, some have not. This book has been incredibly helpful and consistently insightful. I expect to reference it and return to it, on a regular basis.

Review 4:
First and foremost - I feel the best thing about this book is that its written by someone who has actually lived through it.

Its been different for me reading books by psychologists and different professionals who I felt threw a lot of jargon and "canned" exercises that were "feel good" but while I may have issues my mind operates in a smart way and its difficult to "trick" it.

I think when someone has anxiety I could see my beliefs systems being challenges, and I had to let my ego be set aside, I didnt want to be one those of people who have given up on themselves and when they hear someone else has overcome it, it makes them feel bad about themselves.

I took the books information with an open mind without any prejudice and pre conceived notions like "his situation was probably better than mine - and my situation is way worse" (just Tobias says in the book)

it helped my situation tremendously and I feel if you have given everything a shot (or on the other hand are absolutely determined to lead a path to recovery) this book is for you

Unfortunately this is nothing but repetitive self-help drivel.

It's the kind of book where-- even an hour into it-- I was still reading passages that felt like introduction or hype. The kind of stuff that talks at length about "what this book can do for you" and the glories of "the process" and that stuff--

Lots of fluff; VERY LITTLE CONTENT.

This is not the story of how the author overcame social anxiety-- anecdotes are few and far between, and even then they don't help me empathize with the author. It's questionable whether he has social anxiety at all.

For example, he talks about his readiness to please people-- that he would find himself agreeing to things that he didn't want to do. And then he would regret the decision and cancel with a text.

Social anxiety brings a type of paralysis that the author doesn't seem to understand: I wouldn't be able cancel with a text. I simply wouldn't show up at all.

Not calling the author a sham or anything-- I'm sure his shyness was a serious problem for him. But his anxiety is clearly mild enough that I simply can't relate-- and an apparent INABILITY TO GET TO THE POINT makes the book feel like a massive waste of time.

The irony is that he specifically anticipates this reaction and calls you out on it:

In the introduction (or I should say in ONE of the introductions-- since as mentioned before, this book is loaded with the self-help hype stuff and takes FOREVER to actually say anything)-- he suggests that one of the core problems faced by people with social anxiety is that we don't believe other people have it as bad. He compares this belief to a prison fence.

At first, I believed him. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. "Okay," I thought. "Maybe this guy did have it as bad as I do." I was fully ready to toss aside that belief.

But when he (FINALLY) got around to sharing some of his personal experiences with anxiety-- I could not relate at all. HE PROVES HIMSELF WRONG with anecdotes that show that his anxiety as mild or nonexistent.

I was really hoping that I could relate to this one.

In the end, I think my anxiety is only worse. The book seems to enforce that I simply can't relate to anybody-- even people who claim to have social anxiety themselves.

Bottom line: this is self-help trash. Waste of money. Bigger waste of time.
